Nathanael Volckening
Nathanael Volckening (b. 1988) is an oil painter based in Colorado. Raised in Taos, New Mexico, within a family of artists and craftspeople, he was immersed from an early age in the region’s landscapes, diverse cultural traditions, and the enduring legacy of the Taos art colony. These formative experiences continue to inform the way he observes, interprets, and paints the world around him.
Drawing on his studies of light, atmosphere, and the human figure, Volckening combines elements of naturalism and abstraction in his paintings. Using natural and historic pigments, expressive brushwork, and dynamically arranged compositions, he creates landscapes that feel vast and at the same time personal, encouraging the observer to immerse themselves in places of serene contemplation and awe.
